They should just get some college intern. There's probably 10 people at temple that would be excited to do it and at least sort of know their stuff. Doesn't even seem like she's from the area?
Two days later I get a text back that says I'm a basketball player and a businessman, not a Thundercat.

There's no reason to not get someone with a firm grasp of basketball for even like 20K

edit: what Mo said

not gonna pretend to understand the inner workings here but it seems like they'd have hired someone to do it for free if they could.

I've said this before but I think they view the Sixers wing of the staff as an opportunity to increase diversity. Football is too in demand and the other sports have more homogeneous fan bases. Based on the sample of people that write about the Sixers for free online, that seems to knock out a lot of potential candidates.

There has to be some "diverse" candidates who actually are passionate and knowledgeable about sports though. I think it comes down to whoever is hiring these people is an idiot and/or doesn't give a #$!&@.

Maybe she was a great interview or excelled in another position before this one.

Agreed Im sure that's the bigger issue. But if you are an idiot or don't give a #$!&@ you are more likely to not find a good person for the job when the pool is restricted, especially if we're talking about a hypo where they just hired some intern.

Kinda think you're both right. The last two Phillies beats they hired are underwhelming, imo, but I like Zach Berman a lot

I think the bigger issue is that your pool of candidates consists exclusively of people willing to spend half a decade stringing #$!&@ sports stories for small papers, or doing grunt work editing some miserable fat alcoholic's trash copy. Might not be a whole lot of fart-smelling process trusters in that pile

Eh, I'm pretty sure Murphy and Breen, among others, started there very soon after college. And blogging is reputable enough now that you could pluck someone from those ranks.

Or, FFS, take someone from another beat who can actually write. The bar almost couldn't be lower.
