Really well run teams shouldn't have extended periods of crappiness. High draft picks don't mean nearly as much in baseball as they do in other pro sports, and the free agent market is far more liquid, even today. I know it's easier said than done, but always maintaining a solid core and regularly supplementing that core with key free agent acquisitions or have a few spare prospects to trade is the optimal strategy.

Also, this really should be its own thread.

No doubt there is truth in what you say. Look at the Cardinals - they have the odd off years, but they never have 5-8 season stretches of 80-100 losses either.

On the talent evaluation front, I wonder how much of that is losing Mike Arbuckle. I think he was really in place for much of Wade's tenure, and honestly I always thought Wade got a bad rap around here. He had his blind spots, but he also had budget constraints for much of his tenure that Gillick/Amaro never had, and from the moment he took over - fall 1997 - it felt like the Phillies had a plan and we're building toward something, and the farm system really started generating. That was Arbuckle, but Wade should get credit too.

I was pro-Arbuckle to but are the Royals substantially better than us since he joined them?

One more awful first round pick and I'm out on the Phils' amateur scouting department. Moniak, Randolph, and Haseley (albeit in a small sample) all struggling before AA ball is disquieting. Almaraz needs to show he can deliver in the first round--that's where he has the primary responsibility, and where the most value is to be acquired.
Marquelle Fultz: (6/23) "My goal is to be the best player in the NBA."
Ben Simmons: (8/28) "My goal is to be the best in the league."
Don't fight, Embiid has this covered.

I don't follow the draft, but have they really drafted in ways at odds with conventional wisdom?

I don't think they've really reached. Moniak for example was definitely in the discussion for the #1pick and favored by many. The next pick was Senzel who some favored. Seems some portion of the decision was the amount each would require to sign. Right now Senzel looks like the better pick.

In 2015 Randolph was a slight reach at #10. Most publications had him around 20. Luke Williams in the 3rd round wasn't even in most top 500's. Obviously, it's hard to complain when you got Kingery in the 2nd round that year. Last year both Seabold and Spencer Howard were a round or so early. Need to hit at #3 this year.

i always find it hard to proclaim a guy "a round too early" in baseball since you can't trade picks. the teams always have a lot more info than the public on that type of thing. if you like them, take them. that's not something that's exclusive to the phils either.

Yeah....Wolevers last draft looks like a beaut with Nola and Hoskins. Of course, rumor is that Rube told him no HS players and that he was going to be fired after the draft in any event but still.

Phillies won their 14th game last year on May 14th. I figure it's all gravy from now on over the next three weeks.

Hoskins and Nola look like great picks. Kingery possibly great, but it's early to anoint him a star player, or even an average one. The picks made by Almaraz start with Randolph, who was a reach, but there really wasn't a whole lot on the board at that position. I'll go back and look at the draft thread and see who we were considering as possibilities. Moniak is probably as good (or as bad) as any of the position players taken high in his draft except Senzel. It's early on Haseley, but you'd really like to see some success above rookie ball for a college first-rounder. Almaraz seems to be a lot better with pitchers.

Looks like when Randolph was picked the top HS position player besides him was Tyler Stephenson, a catcher drafted by the Reds at #11, who has played well and is off to a very hot start this year. The best college player was probably Pittsburg SS Kevin Newman, who has made it to AAA but been pretty awful at bat in both AA and AAA.

I wonder if the Cubs are regretting letting Arrieta go and signing Darvish

Maybe some but Darvish was cruising for 4 2/3 in that last start until the wheels came off after a balk.
