Phillies Salaries

Phillies Salaries

Postby LastTrain » Sat Jan 05, 2019 12:25 pm

Thankfully, tracking Philly salaries against the Competitive Balance Tax has some meaning again. The list below has a lot of guesses and estimates, so take it for what it's worth. The arbitration guesses come from the MattS list published at MLB Trade Rumors. The pre-arb figures are my guesses. Known salaries primarily come from Cot's. The lower pic shows details of the options. I'll try to keep this post updated when changes take place.

While I'd like the list to be as accurate as possible and am happy for constructive feedback to that extent, I'm not all that interested in debating things like this. The primary intent is to get into a relatively close ballpark figure of team salaries so I/we have a clue of what moves may still be available.

By way of explanation, there seemed to be a feeling in the latter part of 2018 the org wasn't especially high on Eflin. After the top 2 or 3 starters, I'd imagine a number of guys in camp have a shot at the other slots. Options may come into play, though specifically for Eflin and Eickhoff I believe they both have at least one option year remaining.

Thanks for putting this together.

Seems weird that JT and Cesar are at the same level of service but Cesar makes more money?

Both avoided arbitration before figures were submitted (I think) so it's not a merit based award just an agreement with the team.

The MattS estimates showed the same discrepancy, though.

Cesar Hernandez (4.154) – $8.9MM
J.T. Realmuto (4.038) – $6.1MM

That .154 for Cesar is days, compared to Realmuto's 38 days. Cesar was probably a Super 2, and he received a 4th year of arb while Realmuto will get the standard 3.

It's also position based so possibly Cesar's comps at 2B earned more than JT's comps at C.

I just edited the last post. I think the primary reason will be that Cesar was a Super 2.

Here's the Cot's timeline. This was his 3rd year of arb, but he still apparently won't be a free agent until after 2020.

1 year/$7.75M (2019)
re-signed by Philadelphia 1/11/19 (avoided arbitration)
1 year/$5.1M (2018)
re-signed by Philadelphia 1/12/18 (avoided arbitration)
1 year/$2.55M (2017)
re-signed by Philadelphia 2/3/17 (avoided arbitration, $2.8M-$2M)

That makes the most sense since the salary builds off the previous. Wasn't thinking about Cesar being a Super 2

With less then $50M to play with the question would be are the Phillies willing to go over for the two big names. Certainly you would move Franco's $5.2M off the books if Manny is the choice, but that would limit the 'both' discussion I would think.
