Hazy Shade of Winter Turns to Cruel Summer, Phils Offseason

So believe it or not, their price came down a little bit, and I’m not underestimating the price because they paid a hefty price, but it was less than it was in November and the Phillies saw an opening and opportunity to get a guy they believe was the best catcher in Major League Baseball

John Stolnis

Apparently the price for JT came down.

Nightengale told a SF radio station that its between Giants and us for Harper. He thinks its a coin flip and we would really have to overbid to get him. Thinks Harper loves idea of playing close to home. Thinks SF offer will be 5/150 or 6/180 or even higher.

Why go to SF and hit 15 homers there? At best. Giants are not a good team.

Uh, 6/180 is a horrible offer if we're offering 10/300... Not only that but there's 3-4 WC teams far better than the Gints who could offer that.

I’m guessing we haven’t offered 10/300.

I think Harper is holding out for a team to relocate to Vegas.

Boras may well just be overhyping Harper's interest in SF to try to get the Phils to bid against themselves. It's a dangerous game and could cost his client big time. If I'm the Phils I tell him If he really needs an extra $100MM+ to want to play in Philly then it's not a good match for either side -- and I mean it it when I tell him.

Lest us not forget Boob posted about A's being confident Murray will be at Spring Training at literally the same time Murray announced he's sticking with football.

He's contradicting himself. Makes it sound as though it is likely Harper signs with SF, but calls it a "coin flip" which implies he is just as likely to sign with the Phils.

I don’t think he’s contradicting himself. He’s saying the ability of the phils to pay much more evens it out between the two teams. The Giants are also the 21st team rumored to have a shot at him

The Phillies don't view the Giants as a threat, I can tell you that much.

Nightengale can pump the Giants as much as he wants, I still consider the Nationals the biggest threat until the end.

As for the Giants and supposedly offering a short term deal, I'd throw out if he really wants a short term deal I'd offer 3/120(and make it clear we'd still do a long term deal). Should short circuit any Giants offer. Nobody else is going to give $40M AAV. We don't take on the long term risk. It gives him an opportunity to get a feel for Philly without being locked in. And it gets him just passed the new CBA.

According to Cots, the Phils are currently at 130 million.

As a result I would bet
They will be adding at least 2 players, poss three. Current predicted WAR brings them in at three or four in the standings.

Has discussion of Machado's landing spot fallen off the map, or just our map?
