they are two different talent sets altogether. It's possible to turn a position player into a mediocre pitcher, but if a pitcher doesn't have the physical attributes necessary (extremely enhanced eyesight, fast-twitch muscles, etc.) there's no way for a pitcher (nor anyone else) to "learn" how to hit major-league pitching. It's like proposing that Hervé Villechaize can be taught to dunk. (when he was alive of course).

I like pitchers hitting however the argument about extreme specialization and the impossibility of part-time hitters to deal with the pitching that results is a persuasive one.

I have to say I really am enamoured of the idea that each position player be required to pitch one inning, a la volleyball. And what I mean by enamoured is: I would buy a ticket to watch a major league game played on that rule set.

In other words, say the Angels are pitching Ohtani, then they could submit a lineup with Ohtani listed as a batter and their opponent would be forced to bat the pitcher. If both teams list a DH at the lineup exchange, then there's a DH.

This right here should be the rule change.

i mean not really. it was a huge deal cliff lee caught a pop up right to him. pitchers are specialsts and everyone else usually plays a position or two and is expected to hit too.

A fielding competition between pitchers, left fielders and first baseman would be interesting.

Pitchers should just take more batting practice and get better at batting. They don't pitch ALL the time. They get rest days and days in which they just do bullpen sessions. Factor in some time in the cage and with the hitting coach each day.

Catchers have to catch, bat, learn the pitchers and the opposing batters. That's a lot of work. They even have all that extra equipment to take on and off as well as a higher than the average position player injury risk. Most of them suck at hitting anyway so maybe we should add another DH and avoid boring catcher at bats.

And Rhys Hoskins should practice fielding more so he can play shortstop.

Just because pitchers have always sucked at hitting doesn’t make it a good reason to have them keep going up there flailing away helplessly.

that's unrealistic. Look at the number of AAAA players who can't hit in MLB. I'm sure they take hundreds of swings a day to try to get better, but if you don't have the superior tools to hit MLB pitching no amount of training will transform you.

Starting pitchers see real live pitching once every five days or so for 2 or 3 at bats. While I’m sure some extra time in the cage could help some, I doubt it’d make a significant difference. More pitchers nowadays are throwing much harder and have nastier stuff than in years past, making it even less likely that a pitcher with a bat in his hands will do anything useful with it.
