It's not a pet peeve. I don't care if people say it. I just don't say it because I don't think it makes any sense.

some feel the use of "by the way" is a means of briefly and politely interjecting information that is NOT pertinent to the central conversation:

Picture yourself on a trip. There is a way to go. There are also unrelated things you see along the way. Those things are not the way; they are just along the way, beside the way, by the way. Now picture yourself in a conversation. There is a point, a subject, a topic. Then there are unrelated things as well. "By the way," implies a topic unrelated to the main conversation.
