Ye Olde Netflix Thread

Netflix is raising prices 60% kind of

Netflix will no longer offer a $9.99 package of DVD-by-mail and unlimited streaming, the company said in a statement today. Instead, more than 23 million subscribers will pay $15.98 monthly beginning Sept. 1 if they choose both options, or $7.99 for just one.

.....

“Given the long life we think DVDs by mail will have, treating DVDs as a $2 add-on to our unlimited streaming plan neither makes great financial sense nor satisfies people who just want DVDs,” Netflix said in the posting.

I had a meeting at the Pentagon with lots of generals. They were like from a movie. Better looking than Tom Cruise & stronger.

Yeah, it's kind of tough. I don't want to pay more, but $16/mo is what I used to pay to rent 3 movies at blockbuster so I don't want to bitch about it too much.

tbh, we barely use the mail DVD thing. We get a dvd in the mail and it sits around for days before we get around to watching it. Most of the stuff we want is available streaming.

We dropped the mail option earlier in the year, because we were just using streaming for kids' shows and the occasional movie.

Netflix noob. Streaming only. Disappointed that so many choices are DVD only, but for $8 I got this thing on our TV in Brooklyn, our TV in W Chester, TP Jr's iPad, GF Jr's iPhone, my laptop, and we still have one more free device to deploy. That's a good value.

My guess is that they next cut back on the six devices for $8. Maybe give you 2 or 3, then charge more for extra devices.

The Redbox and Blockbuster Express kiosks where you get new stuff for a buck a night makes me lean toward just keeping the streaming package

I guess Netflix and Hulu Plus are neck and neck now? I just dumped cable and am thinking of getting on of them, thoughts?

Redbox, with the online reservation, rocks. Some kids' shows are $0.50 right now, so I picked up three for a dollar yesterday, with a free credit I had. The kids will probably watch them again this afternoon before I take them back.

I had one problem where the machine wouldn't return a disk, and I had to drive pretty far to the next machine. But since then, we've gotten more machines around here.

However, nothing tops the experience we had about a week and a half ago. Had to return one movie, and were going to get the kids a movie too. There was this completely trashy family who spent almost fifteen minutes making their movie selection while I waited behind them. I don't know hom long there were there before I got there. There was no apology for how long they kept us waiting, no offer to let us drop off our movie. They were just going through the screens reading/discussing/arguing over each choice.

Until Netflix starts streaming newer movies, I guess I'm sticking with the DVD plan. This blows.

the streaming collection kind of sucks after a while if you already have Starz. So many Starz movies on streaming instantly.
Continued success, thanks for comin' on the show!

I disagree pretty strongly. I've seen a lot of awesome movies I never would have heard of because of Netflix streaming. they probably won't have the specific movie you search for, but if you browse around, there's so much good stuff

If you have the Netflix, be sure to watch "Malena" for a thoughtful coming-of-age-in-Sicily-while-that-crazy-Mussolini-is-making-waves flick that gives you many generous glimpses of the incomparable Monica Bellucci.

Netflix streaming is pretty awesome for watching TV shows--you can watch one or two episodes at a time without clogging up your queue, which is pretty convenient when you're the only one in the house who cares about Battle Star Galactica.
