Philly Area Architecture, Skyline, and Past/Future Projects.

Postby Warszawa » Sun Jan 27, 2008 5:00 pm

For anyone who would like to post pics or comment on the city architecture, the new (and improved?) skyline, and past or future projects.

Drove past this church the other day, which I guess is due to be torn down but I wondered how someone could let that happen? Its the Christ Memorial Reformed Church on 43rd and Chestnut.
Image

Also anyone have any comments on the Comcast Tower and what it does to the city skyline?

And.....has anyone noticed or have info regarding the demolition of two high rises that are visible from I-95 (near the route 320 exit) in Chester City?

Here's a story from 2004 about when the tower on the church collapsed. In this it was intimated that they were trying to rebuild, but that may not have proved financially or structurally viable. I agree it's a shame-I'm sure whatever goes up in its stead won't be nearly as attractive, and it appears to have been created by a noteworthy firm.

Philly developer about to make Comcast Center look piddly.

1,500 ft. of fun. Yes, that's taller than the Sears Tower.

Official website

More info from skyscraperpage.com

Hey, I am a skyscraper/skyline nerd too... I think all of the years in Pittsburgh have done it to me...

And that is an awesome looking tower, love it in this pic:

Does it not resemble one of the original designs for the new WTC?

Yeah, it does kinda look like one of the WTC renderings.

A couple user renderings on the skyscraperpage.com link really bring out how massive this thing would look on the skyline.

Philly is both dirty and smelly
Drunk and stupid is no way to be remembered but it is an easy way to forget.

But I took them away from all that. Now they work for me.

Hasn't one of the Liberty Place towers been converted to residential space because there isn't that much demand for commercial office space in center city?

Liberty 2 has some condos now, but it's just the top 20 floors or so.

Office space availablity is actually really low despite all the new sq. ft. Comcast has added. There's sufficient demand for both this tower and the Cira 2 project (part of UPenn's Schuylkill-side expansion). I'll find the link that verifies this...I think it was a report in Philadelphia Business Journal.

These proposals, while obviously very early, are really cool. I've been thinking about putting a roof top deck on my house and this is pushing me more in that direction. Here's the view from my roof from March '07 while the Comcast Center was still under construction:

I am a G-Ho-ite. And unfortunately, roof decks are more expensive than I thought.

...and hard as hell to get approval for, from what I hear. G-Ho may be different, but my aunt had a heckuva time getting her's in Queen Village.

Are they knocking down the Sterling? Otherwise, this doesn't seem feasible. I cant see how they will have enough room
I know what you're asking yourself and the answer is yes. I have a nick name for my penis. Its called the Octagon, but I also nick named my testes - my left one is James Westfall and my right one is Doctor Kenneth Noisewater.

Sooooo, I hate it. The spire is dumb-looking and fairly transparent and ineffective in its function of making the building seem taller than it is; the square base that goes a third of the way up just looks chunky and awkward. And although this reason may seem irrational, I don't think it's the best idea to have Philly's biggest building be the one that got vetoed in NYC.

Not to scale?

Also, I kind of agree with Housh - I don't like it that much
