I've said before that when watching Okafor play defense, it almost seems as if you're watching somebody who, over the course of his entire career, coaches have said "Look, focus your energy on carrying our offensive burden. Avoid foul trouble. Just be big around the rim and challenge shots when they come at you."

It's a strategy that makes sense at the lower levels of basketball, where zone defenses can make that more viable, and where his offensive dominance is even more pronounced. But changing that mindset, instilling a new mentality, and forging the kind of elite defensive awareness he would need to overcome his below average physical tools is a tough turnaround to make.

This kind of thing is a big reason why the NBA should be aggressively working to make the D-League the second best basketball league in the world and a true minor league to the NBA that players can go to out of high school, make a good wage, and develop their game for the NBA.

Idiots who label themselves "old-schoolers" like Alaa who think guys not spending enough time in college to develop hurts the pro game are missing a big part of the problem: college teams aren't developing the high level prospects these days. They milk them for short term success (because for them these kids aren't longterm investments anyway) and cover flaws instead of working on them.

I have a hard time figuring out how Noel plays next to Embiid too. he's pretty bad at the PF.

it's not that tough. They flip between positions on offense and defense. voila

assuming he's healthy, I think playing him this year has a couple key advantages:

1) positivity and momentum to build on - both for the fan base but also the team.
2) you'll have a much better understanding of how your 3 centers interact with each other, thereby having more evidence and understanding of who to keep

We'd also maximize our trade leverage by proving Embiid can play. Assuming of course there's no benefit to staying off of the foot for four more months.

plus we can start to get Embiid interviews. no doubt there is going to be a goldmine/treasure trove of awesome quotes from that guy over the next 5-50 years.

He really was able to hone his craft when it comes to outside shooting during this downtime. His shot is abnormally smooth and coordinated looking for a monster.

the amazing thing to me for a guy that young who has sat on the sidelines for so long is how intelligent and mentally fortified he has shown to be. I think when something you love is taken away from you and you're forced to become an observer, it heightens your sense of perspective. He has done all the right things with his time away from the court. It's all coming together guys..
