Gross hit .191 against lefties this year

Gross hit .191 against lefties this season. Moyer allowed a .240 average against left-handed batters, .270 vs. right-handed batters. Maddon said right-handed-hitting Rocco Baldelli's health was not a factor, even with rain falling pregame and possible wet conditions in the outfield.

"I really was pondering that one a lot," Maddon said about the decision to start Gross in right field. "Again, it's versus Jamie Moyer, the left-handed situation. You look at Jamie, I've known him for years. You look at our right-handed hitters versus him, you look at our left-handed hitters against him. Believe me, that one I went back and forth with a lot.

"I was not comfortable making that decision until I really let it stir a bit. The way Gabe swings, the swing path where Jamie likes to throw the ball, I felt Gabe was the best matchup with him even over our right-handed hitters tonight. So we chose to go in that direction, and that's quite frankly the reasons.

I went to games one and two in Tampa. The Phillies are on the verge of an offensive explosion and the Rays are playing with one less hitter than they are used to.
The Rays fans are pretty bad. They actually run instructional videos on when to use their cowbells before each game.

6:40 p.m. ET
I'm camped out here in the Rays dugout because, quite frankly, there's nothing else to do. Edwin Jackson just came out to check the weather.

He told me players aren't doing much in the clubhouse except playing cards, watching college football and hitting in the batting cage. Jackson said the latest they heard was a possible start time between 9:15 and 10:00 p.m.

"I'd rather play at 10 [p.m.] than the offday,' Jackson said. "Because you can sleep in [on Sunday]."

Meanwhile the Phillies pitchers are playing catch in right field in the rain.

Phils struggle in Game 3s (6:18 p.m. ET)
The Phillies will be attempting to win the first Game 3 in team history. In five previous Game 3s, the Phillies have lost each time, including four one-run losses.

From the looks of the rader on weather.com, the game certainly has a chance to be played.

They have fared just as well in Game 4's, I'm afraid.

I hope he specified World Series or something because they won Game 3 in 1981

Hmm, and 1978 for that matter

It would be nice if MLB came out with an official statement regarding the start time situation.

Yeah, it's the World Series. Phillies 3-12 all time in Game 3's, with the other win coming in the 1981 Division Series vs. the Expos.

And yeah, those stats are useless. With the exception that the last two game 3 losses* have come in a game in which Jamie Moyer started.

* - actually, the last three. But he pitched well in Colorado last year.
